Welcome to Philadelphia's Historic South 9th Street Italian Market
America’s Oldest & Continuously Operating Outdoor Market is located in South Philadelphia’s Bella Vista & Passyunk Square communities. We are a collection of nearly 200 individual businesses situated between 2 Public Parks & 2 beautiful Churches. Our Market spans over 20 city blocks including 8th, 9th & 10th Streets from Fitzwater Street at the north thru Wharton Street at the south. We are the Home to generations-old family businesses as well as many new, ethnic family businesses eager to share their traditions. We proudly host Philadelphia’s Largest & Best Block-Party, the S. 9th St. Italian Market Festival.
The influx of international influences on the South 9th Street Italian Market, and its surrounding neighborhood is a wonderful assault on the senses. The smell of herbs and spices, fresh seafood , and ground coffee beans mingles perfectly with the crackle of the butcher’s brown paper, multiple languages heard on the street, and the sight of fresh sheets of pasta and silky ribbons of homemade chocolate drying in storefront windows–not to mention the dozens of rows of colorful produce. The market can be especially cozy in the winter when merchants use barrels of fire to keep shoppers warm and all of the smells are heightened.
